virtue

The English translation of a Greek term pointing, in the Greek philosophical tradition, to excellence of moral character. OT and NT writers speak more often of righteousness than of virtue, because the former points less to human achievement and more to God’s action. In the NRSV, the term occurs only in (Prov 11:16).
