water of bitterness

A specially prepared potion given by a priest to a woman whose husband suspects her of committing adultery, but can offer no adequate proof (Num 5:11-31). The potion would distort the womb or cause a miscarriage in a guilty woman, but would allow an innocent wife to conceive.
